Eco Design Ready
Are you ready? What does it all mean? What should we be telling our customers and the consumer?
As you may be aware EcoDesign is fast approaching us within the Solid Fuel Industry. The scheme being a new landmark with a clear objective to increase environmental awareness and the benefits of wood burning stoves, to provide confidence and a comfort to the consumer that they are an ethical purchaser.
Wood burning stoves have had some bad press recently where lobbyists would have you believe that the particulates and the emissions are bad for your health and the environment. On the other hand, similar lobbyists are promoting the benefits of localised and district heating solutions using biomass (wood) as a source of clean renewable energy. So, what’s the truth?
Air quality is important to all of us, health and the impact on the environment are both very important factors that any responsible manufacturer, distributor and retailer/installer should be mindful of. However, the reality of the situation is that wood burning stoves are getting more efficient, the wood sure scheme will help drive the correct consumer behavior with the use of wood burning appliances. We all must take some responsibility to educate the consumer regarding the wood burning appliance, its use and how to get the most from it in a socially responsible manner. Even though wood burning stoves are a relatively low source of emissions, we can all make a difference in reducing emissions by promoting EcoDesign ready appliances and its correct use with approved fuel types.
Ecodesign is the European-wide programme to lower emissions. It is due to come into force in the UK in 2022. Docherty Group have been working closely with manufactures and through its membership of the Stove Industry Alliance (SIA) to ensure we have Eco Design ready appliances ahead of the 2022 target. Docherty have a full range of wood burning stoves that already carry the Eco Design ready badge, providing confidence to our customers regarding the performance of the appliance and the ethical provision of wood burning products. The Ecodesign Ready scheme is supported by DEFRA, the Ecodesign Ready label will set the standard moving forward and will demonstrate the industries commitment to ethical and social responsible progression within our industry.
